The gap between the gate and the spreadsheet.

Boat-ramp operations are often managed through paper forms, spreadsheets, text messages, photo folders, and institutional memory. Each tool can hold part of the process, but the full history is difficult to see.

Boat Ramp Desk is being built from direct experience managing a controlled-access private lake ramp with hundreds of watercraft. That work involved seasonal registration, launch and removal records, tag numbers, photographs, review and approval decisions, and procedures intended to reduce the risk of introducing aquatic invasive species — carried out in large part by board members and volunteers.

Two problems showed up over and over. The first was continuity. When the people doing the work changed between seasons, the reasoning behind a decision usually left with them, and the next person inherited a result without the context. The second was retrieval. The information almost always existed somewhere, but answering a straightforward question meant checking a binder, a spreadsheet, a phone's camera roll, and somebody's memory, then hoping the four agreed.

The same record turns out to matter for lake protection. An organization that has decided to run a prevention procedure at its ramp still has to show what it actually did, season after season, as its volunteers change. We write about that separately in our guidance on aquatic invasive species, which is meant to be useful on its own terms rather than as a sales document.
